Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
North Texas Psychotherapy Associates
Lewisville, TX
Can I have a relationship with my therapist outside of the therapy setting? No. Therapy is a professional relationship between client and counselor. Intimate details about the client are revealed on a regular basis while the therapist discloses when appropriate. In this situation, a power struggle can arise from which deception or abuse occur.
Clients and therapists may engage in coincidental contact outside the office. It is not usually a good idea to participate in therapy with someone you know in a separate context (business, friendship, etc.) Not only is it unethical, it can hinder the therapy process.

I don’t know if I need to see a counselor. How can I tell? Depression and anxiety are problems that happen to most people. Serious episodes may cause loss of interest or motivation, weight loss/gain or feelings of helplessness/hopelessness. After an extended period of these symptoms, treatment is necessary. Depression may be caused by stress or a serious life change.
Bipolar disorder involves serious mood swings in periods of a day or week, where a persons behavior becomes unpredictable and possibly dangerous. Counseling can help correct irregular thought patterns that cause depression.
Worrying is a normal human action, but when the worry becomes too serious to handle, anxiety occurs. Ongoing, excessive worry, physical/emotional tension, irrational fears, or pessimism can be characteristics of Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Physical tension may include increased heart rate, shaking, fatigue, or insomnia.
Anxiety can also manifest itself in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, where a person feels uncontrollable urges to order things or engage in repetitive behaviors. Panic Disorder is a condition that involves the fear of panic attacks, manifesting itself in fear of the self.
