Individual Counseling
Difficulties occasionally arise in life at the most inopportune times. At these times, we often seek our friends or family for help. However, some problems are too intense or private to share with those around you. These same friends or family may actually be a part of the problem. Your counselor will be intent on hearing your full concerns and then will work with you to find new ways to understand, cope with, &/or solve these difficulties.

Individual counseling operates on the basis of the relationship—you and your therapist share confidential line of communication. Sharing your thoughts and worries with another person can be a great relief. Through one-on-one interaction and focus by both parties, you will learn new skills and strategies for navigating life’s problems.

Play Therapy
First introduced in 1919, play therapy is a well researched treatment based on sound psychological principals and has proven to been effective for initiating positive changes in children’s behavior. Research by Play Therapist in the United Kingdom indicated that 71% of children who participated in play therapy experienced positive changes.

As the therapist creates a private, safe, and nurturing environment, the child is allowed to explore his or her unlimited possibilities. Healing can happen in many different ways due to the unstructured environment of the playroom. Creativity and imagination help cure impulses outside of the child’s awareness. Medication is typically not necessary in conjunction with play therapy.

During a play therapy session, the therapist will reflect her observation of the actions of the child to encourage continuity of play. When a child has her own special time to explore the environment and her inner self, The child can then act out difficulties and develop strategies to deal with struggles. This child-centered approach offers the child workable solutions and the chance to develop positive views of the future.

Sessions can be 30-60 minutes in length and may be individualized or with a group. The child chooses the tools to utilize. Choices may include creative visualization, therapeutic story telling, drama and role play, puppets and masks, sand tray, art, dance, movement and more.

Family Counseling
The goal of Marriage and Family counseling is to positively develop both the individuals in therapy and the family unit as a whole. While one person may be seeking counseling, often the problem lies with the family unit as a whole. In this case, open communication and problem solving can be beneficial to all family members. Families influence conversations between client and therapist, bringing up valid points of view and sharing, with the therapist, knowledge and understanding of the individual within their environment. Family therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment in nearly every psychological or relationship problem. This is especially true when treatment involves children and adolescents.

Group Work
Group counseling brings together a small group of people with one or two therapists to talk about their problems. Groups can focus on a number of specific issues.

Our staff will facilitate communication between group members about their daily struggles, offer other members support, or perhaps some healthily confront. Once an individual understands their behavior, it is possible to learn new behaviors and coping skills.

All group members and leaders operate on a strictly confidential basis and sign a confidentiality agreement at the beginning of group. This ensures safety, honesty, and warmth in the group.

We also do special groups; Social Skills, anger management, Bully Proofing, My Brain get Stuck (OCD kids), Organization Skills (ADHD kids) and others. Go to Events for more information.

Computer Assisted Learning

For many children and adolescents with developmental disorders or delays, understanding the social environment can be difficult. Newly developed software gives them the opportunity to work through their problems via technology. Our extensive collection of software includes games for learning new skills do deal with teasing, control anger, improve focus, and reduce hyperactivity. We also utilize biofeedback software. Biofeedback involves attaching sensors to the fingers of the user. These sensors read heart rate and sweat levels and reward users for calming down. Other games are designed to help children learn new social skills or recognize facial expressions. Using computer games that stimulate learning can be rewarding for both adults and children.
